La uva mencía es muy original y bastante fácil de identificar al probar un vino. Con más razón todavía, si el vino no tiene diferentes variedades y es 100% mencía como es el caso el vino que nos ocupa.
El Cepas Viejas lleva varios años acumulando premios y es de los vinos más conocidos de la tierra. La mayor parte de las críticas coinciden en que va perdiendo fuerza cada año (desde la maravillosa añada de 2002) pero yo no puedo estar de acuerdo. Tampoco considero que vaya mejorando pero tengo claro que es un valor seguro para pedir en cualquier restaurante que lo ofrezcan.
A la vista, el color es rojo picota, con ribetes violáceos y una lágrima amplia, lenta, tranquila, preciosa.
En nariz, es complejo, algo de regaliz, fresas, frutas oscuras, también cacao. Es intenso, muchos aromas. Poca madera. Promete bastante desde el principio.
En boca, muy rico, amplio, fácil entrada, agradable, buena acidez. El final, casi mejor, es largo, profundo y algo amargo.
La verdad es que es una maravilla y es difícil que no guste en una mesa de muchos comensales. Tanto a los amantes del vino como a los que se dejan llevar más. Y encima, con un precio muy ajustado aunque eso ya depende del lugar donde se disfrute. Pero en tiendas, el precio se mantiene ligeramente por encima de los 10 euros y es digno de agradecer que no hayan disparado el precio a pesar del éxito cosechado.
